Amanda Lacey’s beauty secrets

Posted on by Beyond Bespoke

She’s known as the English rose of beauty and has smoothed the skin of the rich and famous, from Gwyneth Paltrow to George Clooney. Here, the UK’s leading facialist Amanda Lacey tells Claire Bowman why balance is the key to ageing gracefully, and why she won’t back peddle on her New Year’s resolution

What three beauty products can you not live without?
My three hero products: Amanda Lacey Cleansing Pomade, Miracle Tonic and Oils of Provence. There’s nothing like the cleanser – it leaves the skin comfortable without stripping it – while the oils act as a gentle exfoliant, removing dead cells and leaving the skin really soft. The Miracle Tonic is a spot treatment that helps to heal skin and reduce redness, heat and irritation.

Being still – that’s my everyday luxury

What’s your daily beauty regimen?
I’ve followed the same regimen religiously for 20 years: first thing in the morning I’ll cleanse, then take it off with warm water, and apply a fine skin serum, which acts as a great make-up base and locks in the moisture. At night, I’ll cleanse again, then apply the Oils of Provence. At this time of year you have to keep the skin hydrated.

What’s in your make-up bag?
Guerlain Parure Illuminaire, Chanel Le Blanc Primer, Diorshow mascara, and a Tom Ford lipstick in Coral.

Your everyday luxury?
To get out and do something creative like go to Tate Modern or off to the East End to explore. I need to be able to call time my own. In many ways life is a luxury; being still is what counts as my everyday luxury.

Life should be nourishing; extremes wear you down

Is there a secret to ageing gracefully?
It’s all about balance. If you enjoy what you do, it’s not work, it’s a lifestyle choice and that is reflected in the way you look. Life should be nourishing; if your mind and body are both in balance and you are happy in yourself you will grow old gracefully. Extremes will wear you down, which will show in your face. Your face becomes traumatised by your own dilemmas.

What’s your skin’s worst enemy?
The sun, without a doubt. In my opinion sun is the most damaging to fair Caucasian skin; along with too much alcohol intake it’s the greatest ager. For that reason I make sure I use a Lancaster SP15 or SP30 every day throughout the winter.

Do you have a New Year’s resolution?
Yes, to get a bicycle. I live in Chelsea and if you follow the tow path all the way to Richmond it’s a 27-mile round trip. In fact, I’m going to buy a bike tomorrow!
