A family estate completely transformed with bespoke treehouses, koi-carp lake and a lake house for the adults, Blue Forest talk us through this stunning project

What was the project?
‘At The Water’s Edge’ is a bespoke treehouse project designed and built by Blue Forest for a private family based in Surrey. The project includes a fantasy treehouse village in the trees with three individual children’s treehouses connected by rope bridges, a swimming pool that can be cleverly disguised under decking when not in use, a koi-carp lake and island complete with a beautiful willow tree, and a contemporary crescent-shaped Lake House for the grownups.

What was the original brief?
The family wanted to completely transform the grounds of their estate and create a magical and multi-functional hideaway. It was important that the family could use the space to spend quality time together and with friends, but also have their own individual retreats.

What was the biggest challenge?
The Treehouses and the Lake House are two very different structural designs in close proximity to each other, so it was important to make sure the styles flowed properly and melded together well. We also had to be aware of the risks involved in building next to a newly landscaped lake.

What are you most pleased with?
One of the treehouses has a beautiful copper tiled roof, which glints in the sunlight and offers a nice contrast to the other cedar roofs. We haven’t used this feature before in our other projects so we were pleased this new design worked well. At Blue Forest we know that our clients enjoy the finer things in life, so our treehouses are usually kitted out with some pretty cool gadgets and this project was no exception. We installed a high-tech mood lighting system across all of the outdoor decking and inside the Lake House, which can be controlled by the client’s iPad.

Client involvement – hands on or hands-off?
We always make sure that we regularly liaise with our clients throughout the design and construction process, and keep them updated with how things are progressing. Our treehouses should be a reflection of our client’s personality and it’s vital that their own style is incorporated into the architecture.

What next?
We are working on some very exciting treehouse projects for more private families, which we love doing, as the Blue Forest Design Team get to be really creative. Over the next five years we intend to become (not just the UK’s but) the world’s leading tree house Design and Construction specialists. As a key element of this plan we are pioneering a new approach within the leisure and public services sector, developing bespoke sustainable accommodation solutions for the hotel and leisure industry as well as continuing to design and build the most spectacular tree houses in the world.
