Organic September

Posted on by Abbie Coombes

It's Organic September, so it seems only fitting that we celebrate our brands that remain 100% organic in everything they do, and produce. From Made For Life Organics, the White T Shirt Co, By Sarah London, Elemental Herbology and Dorset Sea Salt Co, we take a look at the brands that will help you to 'organic your September.' The concept is one that sprung from the Soil Association in an effort to encourage individuals to make changes to their purchasing habits. We hope that in showcasing these brands, we can provoke reflection on this too.

The benefits of adopting an organic approach to the production of food, clothing and skincare products are endless. Not only is the environmental damage considerably less, but the natural ingredients and processes in organic food and skincare products also serve to have greater health benefits. We first take a look at White T Shirt Co, a brand which seeks to eradicate our 'throwaway fashion' culture  that so many of us seem to be a participant of. Instead, this is a brand that has sustainability in mind.

The online Fashion Industry Waste statistics reveal that it takes 'more than 5,000 gallons of water to manufacture just a t-shirt and a pair of jeans.' It goes on to state that 'using recycled cotton saves 20,000 litres of water per kilogram of cotton.' In addition to this, it is also important to note that conventional cotton accounts for nearly 25% of the insecticides and 10% of pesticides throughout the world. It is paramount that we stop contributing to this statistic; opting for clothing made with organic cotton, is a way in which you can achieve just that.

The White T-Shirt Co highlight how they do not contribute to this extremely unethical way of clothing production...

"Part of being GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified is that our production process is monitored from germination to post box. So for example all our cotton is hand picked, we use non-metallic dyes and we use Hydrogen Peroxide to whiten our cotton rather than bleach as this can be totally neutralised after use. The Danish Company we partner with operates to ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management) standards and all our materials are are GOTS, Oeko-Tex 100 and EU eco label approved."

Once you've made your wardrobe that little bit greener, why not green your beauty routine too, without I must add, having to compromise on quality. Fortunately, we know three skincare brands that can help you to achieve just that.

First of all, let's take a look at By Sarah London, a newly established brand formed by two sisters on a mission to take on the organic and natural skincare world.

Sarah and Lauren, the brains behind By Sarah London seek to adopt a transparent approach in everything they do. Their skinacre products' packaging and labelling is very minimalistic, reinforcing an honest, non-jargon filled approach whilst also conveying that there are no synthetic ingredients lurking within the bottle!

The sisters speak of how they contribute to organic and eco-friendly production practices...

"Through the meticulous sourcing of our ingredients, we are proud to support the organic farming community who avoid the use of synthetic pesticides, artificial chemical fertilisers, herbicides and GM crops, and are also committed to protecting the soil, respecting animal welfare and minimising pollution. Our customers also love our amber glass bottles, which not only look beautiful in their bathrooms, but can also be recycled and upcycled."

Made For Life Organics was the first UK company to achieve 100% organic certification across their entire collection from the Soil Association. Every single product available to purchase in Made For Life Organic's range has been blended by hand and they make a conscious effort to track the provenance of each ingredient, so each balm, oil or ointment carries with it its very own unique story.

In a similar vein to By Sarah London, Made For Life Organics' ethos is one of  'healthy and wholesome living, from the labels on our recycled glass bottles and jars to the product miles of our ingredients. It is about making choices that contribute to our own wellbeing and that of the world we live.'

Elemental Herbology is yet another skincare brand that can help you to green your beauty routine. Their products are 100% free from synthetic fragrance, artificial colour, SLS, paraben preservatives and mineral oils. Furthermore, they support the responsible harvesting and production of all raw materials and are 100% committed to sourcing only premium grade herbs, flowers, minerals and actives from the world’s most reputable suppliers.

So you're glowing on the outside, but what about on the inside? We take a look at the food brand, Dorset Sea Salt Co and their subtly infused salts.

Dorset Sea Salt Co, take pride in their extremely organic salt making process to produce the finest seasoning to grace our dinner tables. Jethro, the founder of the company highlights how he uses renewable energy to power the salt making process at every stage. There is for instance, onsite solar PV panels and wind turbines.

"We believe we produce something extra special here at the Dorset Sea Salt Company. Like you, we care about where our food comes from. We hand-harvest our sea salt from Britain’s purest waters along the Jurassic coastline. This renders our sea salt the cleanest, purest, and freshest sea salt on the market, offering a distinct taste of Dorset." Jethro, the founder of Dorset Sea Salt Co.
