Top Coffee Houses in South

Posted on by Abbie Coombes

You've made the lunchboxes, dragged the children out of bed, managed to get them dressed and on the school playground, just in time for the bell to ring. Nothing quite compares to the relief of having done the school run. Why not start the new term by giving yourself an after-school run treat; head to your local coffee shop, relax, read a book and most important of all, enjoy the peace and quiet! We take a look at some of our favourite coffee shops across the South, where you can do just that.

The River House, Frome

The River House in Frome is my Saturday morning go-to coffee shop. The quaint town of Frome was only recently voted the 'best place to live' in the South West, and is home to an abundance of small, independently-run, artisan coffee shops. The River House however, in my opinion, tops them all. The café is situated just on top of the River Frome and is home to the most delectable avocado toast and flat whites. The relaxed atmosphere of The River House makes it perfect for flicking through magazines, and their accessible plug sockets, make it a great space for browsing the internet, or catching up on those self admin tasks.

Finca, Dorchester

The rustic interior of the small independent coffee shop in Dorchester, Finca provides the perfect setting for enjoying the freshly roasted in-house beans that make up their delicious coffee; it certainly is the talk of this beautiful Dorset town!

Finca serves an abundance of homemade cakes, toasted sandwiches, croissants and Pain au Chocolat, making it the perfect place to recharge and feel ready to take on the day ahead.

During those warmer months, Finca opens its bi fold doors at the front, making it an ideal spot for a bit of people watching!

 The Exploding Bakery, Exeter

Located to the left of Exeter Central train station, the Exploding Bakery makes for a great place to take that well deserved after- the school run pit stop. Whether you're looking to grab a sourdough toastie, ham and cheese croissant to take away, or fancy taking five minutes out of your busy schedule to enjoy an espresso or latte on one of the rustic benches in, or outside of this relatively new, coffee house, you can be sure that you've found the perfect place to refuel. The Exploding Bakery used to be my morning go-to when starting out on my long trek to university.

Mokoko Coffee, Bath & Bristol

The open-plan bakery and coffee house, Mokoko Coffee opened its doors for the first time in 2011 and its success in Bath, saw a second branch open in Bristol in 2016. Bath Magazine commented that the coffee house is 'a gem of a find and recently voted one of the UK's top 25 businesses by The Sunday Times.' Mokoko in Bristol did in fact win gold in this year's Taste of the West awards.

If you do however, prefer to refuel in the comfort of your own home, why not do so in style with these vibrant British Colour Standard mugs and espresso cups...
