David Harber unveils new sculptural design at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017

Award-winning sculpture designer, David Harber, will unveil his latest classical sculptures at the RHS Cheslea Flower Show 2017. The Eclipse, at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (23-27th May).

My works aim to evoke enchantment via a kind of sculptural playfulness, as if to invite the viewer to question what they see

The Eclipse is an exciting continuation of David Harber’s beguiling interactions with light and darkness, inspired by his imminent 20th wedding anniversary with his wife and co-founder of the business, Sophie. Based on the notion of moving forward together, the piece is reminiscent of the DH Lawrence poem, Fidelity, which was read at the couple’s wedding. The poem describes a ‘sapphire of fidelity’, which David has represented through the outer rings of his sculpture, made from stainless steel and then coated in a dark blue, sapphire hue.

Taking inspiration from the phases of the moon and the shadows of an eclipse, these interlocking, interdependent rings work in harmony from any angle and mutually support each other. The suspended inner ring is then lined with 23¾-carat gold leaf, designed to contrast in time-honoured harmony and create a beguiling interaction between darkness and light. Within the base, integrated LED lights are positioned to capture the finish of the smaller ring and create a thin slither of light, mimicking the eclipse.

This year, celebrated garden designer, Nic Howard, will design the David Harber stand for the second time. On the partnership, Harber comments: “Nic’s professionalism and positive attitude made last year’s show a joy. The Flower Show is a busy event, so it is really important for us to work with fun, like-minded people who share our vision. Our stand is set to be inviting and accessible, while maintaining a strong sense of style and purpose”.

Hoping to repeat 2016’s ‘Best in Show Trade Stand’ award win, Nic comments: “It’s a huge privilege to team up with David Harber for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show again this year. My 2017 design is a contemporary take on a country garden, with a paired-back colour palette made up of green and white, alongside moody landscape materials. We initially began working on this year’s design in August, so I’m looking forward to seeing our display take pride of place on the show’s prestigious Main Avenue.”
