Furniture for the garden

Posted on by Beyond Bespoke

With the surprisingly warm weather in recent days, homeowners are looking at how to get the most of the fresh air. So this month, bespoke interiors guru Letty White-Spunner has focused on all things outdoorsy and how you can make the most of the good weather. Whether you have a tiny balcony or acres of land, there’s something for every type of home when it comes to furniture for the garden.

The portable set

There’s nothing lovelier than being able to sit and eat outside our very own homes. This Rives bistro set from Graham and Green is amazing value for money; simple summer furniture that has the added benefit of being portable. The pale blue colour makes this set an ideal choice for a city garden, terrace or balcony. A sleek and modern design is perfectly matched with traditional shapes and functionality. In a place that is perhaps short of space, this table set absolutely ticks the box.

The Rattan Set

If space is less of an issue then OKA’s new Orseno set is the biggest and the best of them all. Rattan makes for wonderful outdoor furniture as it focuses on being pretty whilst still comfortable and more importantly, weather proof. The Orseno set of table and three curved benches has an aluminium frame but is covered in ‘all weather’ rattan and comes with water resistant cushions. Add either blue or white cushions and dress the table with garden flowers and simple white crockery and you’ve got rather a lovely set up for al-fresco dining. Circular furniture is unusual for the garden as it isn’t as easy to place but the bench style of the Orseno set means that you can seat as many as you like, and treat the other bench as separate seating; one or two of the benches around the table will look just as effective as all three.

The Coffee Table

If the idea of outdoor entertaining isn’t that appealing and you just want to relax by yourself, all you need is a coffee table and a chair. As pretty as rattan is, it’s not the most even of surfaces for supporting your jug of Pimms. This Girona coffee table is not only bigger than most but also has a glass inlay, making it perfectly practical as well. One of these on a lawn would provide a nice juxtaposition of hard versus soft, but the aluminium (and non-rusting) feet make this suitable for any number of areas. The classic basket weave gives it that English look and so this will sit well in both a traditional or contemporary home. Don’t put it somewhere small like a balcony and match this coffee table with a classic rattan armchair to create your own furniture set.

The Armchair

As smart as a square-backed armchair can be, nothing beats the comfort of a rounded profile. Double Half Moon weave is more tightly packed than rattan and this style, combined with two large cushions makes this chair a very comfortable one. Two-tone grey blends well into various settings so this chair strikes a perfect balance between comfort and style. Place a couple of these chairs on a stone terrace with a coffee table for a simple way to do outdoor furniture.

The Fabric

If your tastes go beyond anything you can find on OKA, Graham and Green, John Lewis etc. then you can actually have something upholstered in special outdoor fabric. Enter Extex, a company that specialise in fabric that doesn’t have to come inside when you do. From towelling to deep-pile chenille and jazzy patterns, there’s an option for every kind of outside furniture that you might want and my favourite is the Camber Gala fabric. Available in three colours, it’s ideal for everything from sun loungers to cushions and sofas; stain-repellent, water-resistant, light fast and machine washable. What more could you want from a fabric?

Outdoor furniture is going to be huge this summer so get ahead of the trend and pick up some items for your gardens, terraces and balconies. Go elegant with a matching set or create your own outside oasis with a mixture of textures and colours…so long as it’s comfortable, it’s really very difficult to go wrong.
