Vicci Butler from Organise-Us is on a mission to bring order to our busy lives with her luxury British range of leather diaries, notebooks and lifestyle goods
What was the inspiration for your business?
Before setting up Organise-Us I worked in Investment Banking in London, Paris, Frankfurt, New York and Tokyo. I’d always enjoyed stationery and leather accessories, and in my adult life tried hard to find something that was both functional and pleasing, so when my children started school I decided it would be a good idea to create an at-a-glance planner to segregate the areas of busy lives in one organised book. Our diary collection was launched in 2009 with The Organiseher™ and we now have five diary choices bound annually in a seasonal collection of leather and non-leather covers.
How organised would you say you were?
Painfully organised! If you put structures in place you can avoid being all at sea. Disorder and disorganisation tend to breed chaos. I don’t believe in acquiring stuff for stuff’s sake – you have to love it and it has to work for you.
A lot of people rely on iPhones nowadays to organise their affairs. Is there still a place for the old-fashioned diary?
For me, there is room in life for both, but you register information in a different way when you’re not tapping away on a touch screen. There is something about writing a date down that helps it to stick in the mind.
What is your best-seller?
Our leather mid-size Organsieher diary. Every year we have a range of five leather colours and then we add to it with a palette of on-trend seasonal colours, a non leather range of Pellaq covers is always available in four seasonal colours annually. We find that our customers like to keep their diaries long after they’ve finished using them. They line them up on the bookshelf, and refer back to them as a paper record of what’s gone before.
You have expanded your range of goods in several directions on your website…
Yes, we now stock a range of other leather goods and accessories, from leather totes and visitors’ books to clear travel organisers which are practical and well made and just sell and sell. Our scented candles (below) are made of soy so they burn longer and create a lovely ambience in your home. We get lots of feedback from our customers suggesting products that they would like to see, and we take it very seriously. Our customers are very loyal and cherished!
Any suggestions for Father’s Day on June 21?
Our ‘Dynamic Daddy’ and ‘Greatest Grandfather’ notebooks make lovely gifts, as well our lambskin wallet, which has an extra flap for three extra cards and a mesh instead of plastic covering that allows you to swipe your Oyster Card. Our products just give that little extra.
We imagine your visitors’ books must be very popular…
We’ve actually just created one for a holiday home in South Africa and have had a request for a boat log book. Our orders are very varied, and while we have our own range we can also discuss bespoke commissions.
Bespoke is increasingly popular nowadays. Is that something Organise-Us is able to offer?
Yes, we have seen a huge increase in people wanting to personalise their gifts. Corporate customers choose us for their own branded books to give to clients or for their own in-house use to represent their brand, and we have worked with brands from Elizabeth Arden and the Four Seasons to Jumeirah, as well as for private islands. Because our products are made in England we can work to small quantities, from a one-off to 20, up to 1,000s.
And finally, how would you describe the typical Organise-Us customer?
While relatively traditional they also like something a little quirky and are more interested in function, style and quality than the status of a designer name. And, of course, they have excellent taste and recognise good quality when they see it!
