New Mother Essentials - What They Really Want.

Posted on by Lizzie Watson

Whether you're experiencing motherhood for the first, second, or third time, life with a newborn can be hard work; you're getting to know them, and they're getting to know themselves. Everything is new and unknown, and it's as hard as it is wonderful!

There's a multitude of gifts we can buy for baby, but babies actually need a lot less than we think they need; their requirements are fairly simple - keep them warm, clean, fed and safe. Mothers, on the other hand, are always in need of a few little extras that will help make life with a baby even easier, so we've put together a collection of our best mummy essentials along with with a brief run-through as to why you should consider treating the new mother in your life to something she'll really want.

If you're breastfeeding a baby, you get very hungry! Ward off the 3 am hunger pangs and keep a box of Prestat's Cocoa Dusted Almonds by your bed, along with a large glass of water and a banana. They're great for daytime too, of course, but you'll find it hard to share them!
Those beauty routines you've always had might need to take a back seat for a little while whilst you give yourself time to adjust to motherhood, but that doesn't mean you have to miss out completely. Simplify your routines with Made For Life Organics. You won't want to slather on any heavy creams initially, particularly if you're breastfeeding, as baby will be comforted by the natural smell of you and you won't want to mask that; their quickly absorbing Softening Body Oil is perfect for nourishing your skin without getting in the way. If your face feels drier than normal then their Daily Replenish and Protect Facial Moisturising Balm is the perfect solution, and don't forget about your lips - keep a pot of their Soothe and Nourish Lip Balm by your bed.

If you want to really nourish your skin, then the Tree of Life Balm by Elemental Herbology is perfect for giving your skin a beauty boost; find a willing volunteer to rock baby whilst you relax in a bath for a little while. Take the Contentment Candle by Eloise Hall with you and be rebalanced by the naturally restorative fragrance of patchouli & rose. Wrap up in silk perfection with Longstaff Longstaff's vibrant collection of robes. Light and easy to wear, you'll find you'll never want to take them off.
My hands suffered terribly at the mercy of the continuous hand washing you find yourself doing when you have small children. After every nappy change and hand wash, a small amount of the Mandarin and Geranium Hand and Body Cream will prevent dry, chapped hands, and it smells divine!

Everyone loves a bunch of flowers, and what could be better than the ones that fall through your letterbox and are instantly ready for a vase.  It can feel a little like you might develop cabin fever when you're in the thick of baby-rearing, with it's non-stop feeding and sleeping and changing; so bring the outside inside with the delicate vintage pinks in the Harper from Bloom & Wild. It's bursting with roses, pink snapdragons, alstroemerias and delicate foliage and will bide you some time until you can have a little walk outside with your newest addition.

For a truly special gift that will last a lifetime, a beautifully engraved locket can be just the thing for a mother who loves keepsakes. The Rose Gold Oval Locket by Engravers Guild of London is classic and contemporary, and rose gold is the jewellery colour of the moment - perfect for holding those first locks of baby hair close to your heart.
The deeply nostalgic Every Girl's and Every Boy's Alphabet Book by the hugely talented bookbinder Kate Holland, will give every visitor who comes to meet the new baby a moment to reflect on childhoods gone by. The exquisite artwork is endearing, funny, and entirely relatable.

Comfort is key when you're a new mother, and that means lots, and lots, of cushions. Support every part of you and baby with a Navy Nordic Stripe Cushion from Mutts & Hounds. Under your arms, back of the head, in the small of your back, under your knees (perfect to arrange behind baby when they're learning to sit up too); you can never have enough, and there are many to choose from!
Finally, yet equally as important, having a baby means having to take a lot of extra stuff wherever you go - like nappies and wipes, creams and extra socks. The Mary Tote by Taylor Yates is the perfect solution to needing a larger handbag, but not having to carry a small holdall when you want to pop out for a walk. It's made of super soft leather, comes in some divine colours, and has the perfect amount of inner pockets. Your new adventure begins here!

Spoil that new mum - she deserves it!
