As pheasant shooting season looms ever closer, now is the perfect time to touch up on your technique. Whether you’re a novice having just started the sport, an already experienced shooter or simply a group searching for a fun day out, we have comprised a list of the some of the UK’s best shooting grounds which promise stunning scenery, luxurious clubhouses and expert instructors all at your fingertips.
Holland & Holland
Located in Northwood on the outside of London, Holland & Holland’s shooting grounds ooze traditional style, class and luxury. Once boasting that “If Mr Holland is unable to teach a man to shoot then no-one can”, its 60 acres of expertly-kept grounds and facilities simulating a range of traditional birds still prove this very much true today. With a willingness to teach those from all walks of life at any experience, they offer tuition for women, young shooters, novices and even the most experienced shooters. Just a few visits to this iconic shooting school is sure to guarantee one’s future enjoyment of the sport.
Barbury Shooting School
Based in the Marlborough Downs with its rural and tranquil atmosphere, it’s hard to believe these shooting grounds are just minutes away from the M4. Run by Huw Stephens and a host of other excellent instructors, visitors are ensured expert teaching in gun safety and shooting etiquette. Priding themselves on tailoring lessons to suit each individual whilst also offering archery and air rifle days, it’s not hard to see why Barbury Shooting School won Best Shooting Ground in 2010. It caters to all, whether you’re seeking tuition, a place to practice or events for parties and corporate groups.
West London Shooting School
Despite its peaceful ambience, West London Shooting School is situated in Northolt, within an hour of central London. Previously voted the country’s best shooting ground and recognised as the home of gun fittings, it boasts 100 acres of vast grounds, which are well-equipped with a range of shooting targets and simulated games. A grand shooting lodge on site also offers an excellent dining experience, allowing visitors to enjoy a whole day out there. As well as welcoming already experienced shooters, West London Shooting School will also tutor women, novices and young shooters.
Bisley & Braidwood
In the UK, Bisley offers two stunning shooting schools in separate locations. Situated in Surrey, Bisley Shooting Ground has an impressive 3,000 acres of Surrey Heath and woodland, firmly placing it as Europe’s largest sporting clay ground. Within this are two different campuses: one designed for both groups and those at any experience level whilst the other is an automated pay and play course, a far more challenging training session. Just south of Edinburgh in the picturesque Scottish boarders resides Bisley at Braidwood, Scotland’s largest shooting ground and the host of the 2013 Scottish Championships. These Bisley shooting schools also both offer clubhouses for your dining and relaxing needs as well as unbeatably realistic simulation days.
Previously known as Abbey Burton Clay Shooting, these Somerset based grounds are home to the Olympic Bronze Medallist (Rio 2016), Edward Ling, having been coached at the school by his father. Ling School excels in Shooting Tuition and Entertainment, catering to both individuals and large groups as well as offering annual events, such as Ladies Days. Whilst also selling guns, accessories and clothing, one on one lessons are also available to all regardless of experience level, allowing you to really make the most of your teaching.
Situated in Buckinghamshire within 30 miles of London, E.J. Churchill was voted ‘Best Shooting Ground of the Year’ by both the 2017 Time Inc Shooting Industry Awards and the CPSA Awards. It offers some of the most skilled instructors, 40 acres of stunning grounds within the West Wycombe Estate and over 100 clay shooting stands that simulate some of the most challenging birds. Their facilities are tailored to suit both novices and experienced shooters, with a well-supplied gun shop also available onsite. During the late, light evenings throughout the summer months, E.J. Churchill also offers the unique experience of late night shooting, allowing you to truly enjoy the whole day.
