Goodwood festival of Speed echoes innovation, creativity and supreme luxury of unimaginable scale, celebrating machines so beyond understandable limitations, they have changed the landscape in which they operate. A stage of splendour and showcase, it is here across this coming weekend that the Black Badge story will evolve to unleash the global debut of Dawn Black Badge. Expressed as ‘the most uncompromising expression of open-top luxury in the world’ this unveiling of Dawn follows introductions of the Ghost Black Badge and Wraith Black Badge. Black Badge is Rolls-Royce’s response to the different lifestyle requirements of a younger, increasingly select group of clients who have asked the marque for motor cars with specific, focused characteristics that reflect their different take on modernised luxury. A subset within a subset, the unique allure of Rolls-Royce has always ensured its title as a mainstay for the restless spirits who refuse the status quo and hold a constant yearn to innovate, create and advance. Hypnotising young owners since its launch, this new breed are drawn to Rolls-Royce in the knowledge that no other luxury house can deliver the vision and flexibility on design and engineering demands.
"Black Badge is an alter-ego for our marque, captivating the disrupters, the innovators and those that accept no limitations." - Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars
Drawing upon their instinctive understanding of the unique lives of these ground-breaking individuals, design and engineering treatments have been specifically applied to perfectly amplify the inherent values of these great Rolls-Royces. The third instalment in this staggering story, Dawn Black Badge stands as the most luxurious social and sensual space from which to parade the night. Through its suite of Black Badge engineering, this uncompromising expression of open-top luxury is given a new and darker dimension. At the festival of speed the Dawn Black Badge will be presented in a deeply intense shade of black, exuberating its arrival in defiant confidence and power. In a process that amounts to the most exhausting painting and polishing procedure ever used for a solid paint colour, the finesse of such attention to glamour is almost impossible to comprehend. With black canvas roof and a rear deck of black leather finish, Rolls-Royce’s aviation heritage of exploring production techniques for improved stealth inspired a highly innovative new treatment for the car’s surfaces.
"Overwhelming demand from new patrons of luxury tells us the time is now right to apply this assertive, confident and powerful attitude to Dawn and open this truly transformative presence to the world." - Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars
With threads of aircraft grade aluminium woven together and bonded in carbon fibre, surfaces are treated to six coats of lacquer before being hand-polished to Rolls-Royce’s hallmark mirror finish. In contemporary finish perfectly attuned to the darker, more menacing aesthetic which today’s patrons of luxury demand, this exquisite expression of noir informs every conceivable detail. Finishing the rear interior space, a nod to Sir Malcolm Campbell sees His famous ‘Infinity’ rating logo beautifully embroidered into the car’s rear waterfall. With other exaggerated details of an entirely new exhaust system, which when deployed to ‘low’ celebrates Rolls-Royce’s hallmark V12 engine, the features of Dawn Black Badge are meticulous in their consideration and care over an owners future ambitions. New breaks are a lead feature with an increased diameter of one inch, and fundamental changes to the transmission and throttle strategy allow for an enhanced feeling of urgency without diminishing the stately touring experience of the Rolls-Royce.
With the Black Badge story amplifying in plot and presence, the arrival of the next instalment of Dawn Black Badge upon the Goodwood stage dominates weekend speculation and enthralled conversation, Goodwood this year being the gateway for Rolls-Royce to introduce excellence.
