Behind the Brief
When the owners of a beautiful classical Mayfair home went in search of specialists to install 19 fabulous marquetry floors the obvious choice was Weldon. Here, founder Jasper Weldon talks about the project, which recently won the Hard Floors Category at the International Product Design Awards 2015
What was the project?
The project was the full refurbishment of a Central London classical house in Mayfair. The date of completion was June 2014. The focus of the project was the fabulous marquetry floors, which were inspired by existing Arts and Crafts architectural features and wall coverings.
What was the original brief?
To design, supply and install decorative hardwood flooring to nineteen separate rooms within the property. The floors ranged from simple boarded floors with complex inlaid border patterns to extremely ornate marquetry work in the principal rooms.
What was the biggest challenge?
Programming the installation of very fine woodwork into a building site working with many concurrent trades.
What are you most pleased with?
I must admit that I am particularly pleased with the intricate entwined floral marquetry border in mahogany, wenge and walnut on sycamore. The light, refined lines of the design successfully overcame manufacture and assembly challenges.
Why does the design work so well?
It is a beautiful border installed in a light and airy room with large windows. This contrasts with the sycamore floor, but sits very well with the use of complementary timbers. We are delighted with the final results of this project, particularly the ornate marquetry work.
Client involvement: hands on or hands-off?
Largely hands-off, but with lots of hands-on guidance from the client’s excellent design team.
Hopefully, many more projects of a similar calibre.
