The perfect autumn getaways

Posted on by Beyond Bespoke

These getaways provide the perfect holidays for you to enjoy this autumn, tailor made to provide you with an exceptional experience. Whether you want to relax and sunbathe on the beach in Tanzania or venture out for a hike across the beautiful natural landscape of Sri Lanka, here are the best destinations to getaway this autumn.

Experience the drama of the wildebeest migration, proud Masai warriors stalking the plains and exotic palm-fringed beaches in Tanzania. Our Tailormade regional specialists will help you plan the perfect holiday, taking the stress out of booking it yourself.

Bordering Kenya’s Masai Mara the Serengeti National Park is one of Africa’s most famous game parks. It hosts vast savannah plains, wildlife in awe inspiring numbers, including the annual wildebeest migration which takes place from December to March. Olakira Camp is authentic yet deluxe with large meru tents, a spacious dining area and boma for those evening sundowners.

Tarangire National Park is a quieter park to spot wildlife; with some of the largest populations of elephant in Tanzania and fantastic birdlife. We recommend Oliver’s Camp, a permanent camp with spacious tents plus friendly staff and safari guides. In the south of the country you will find the less-visited Ruaha National Park – wild, remote and virtually untouched. Stay at the Rufiji River Camp, where rustic thatched camps are combined with home-comforts for the perfect stay in the bush.

After a game drive what better way to finish your holiday than on a paradise beach? Lying 35km off the coast in the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar has a variety of accommodation from boutique hotels, private villas and adult-only resorts. Located to the south east, Zawadi Hotel offers nine spacious villas, infinity pool, bar and restaurant with ocean views.

Prices for a 9-day trip including international and internal flights, game drives, meals, 3 nights in Rufiji River Camp, Ruaha National Park and 4 nights in Lazy Lagoon start from £2525 per person.

Costa Rica

An abundance of wildlife isn’t the only attraction of this small country. Visitors can zip-wire across treetops, hike through jungle floors or view rainforests from a canopy walkway; take to a boat and whitewater raft through rapids in Turrialba, snorkel in search of stunning, colourful fish or go whale and dolphin watching in Ballena National Park.

An absolute must-see is Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Shrouded in mist, the cloud forest is one of the best places to spot the resplendent quetzal – among the 400 species of bird that reside here. Hotels are cosy, in the style of wooden Swiss-chalets, with warming hot tubs and home-cooked meals.

Found along the Caribbean beaches in the evenings between March and October, green and leatherback turtles return to Tortuguero National Park year after year to lay their eggs. Walking distance from the beaches where turtles nest is Mawamba Lodge, set within gardens of tropical plants and flowers and offering spacious ‘casita’ style bungalow rooms with views of the canal.

Located along the Nicoya Peninsula Tango Mar beachfront resort is situated within 150 acres of manicured gardens offering a range of rooms and villas, a 9-hole golf course and spa. Located within easy reach of Curu Wildlife Reserve and Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, it’s perfectly situated for both relaxation and exploration.

Prices for a 14 day guided, highlights tour of Costa Rica, based on comfortable hotels starts from £2195 per person.

Vietnam – where ornate temples smoke with incense and busy night markets buzz with hagglers and vendors. Terraced mountains overlook lush paddy fields, abandoned temples hide and huge limestone formations jut out of the sea. At Explore Tailormade our regional specialists can help you plan the perfect south-east Asian adventure, combining authentic experiences with all the comforts of a modern hotel.

East of Hanoi is peaceful Halong Bay, where hundreds of jungle clad islands rise from the jade green waters of the bay. Sail, swim and kayak around stunning limestone outcrops. To the north are scenic towns of Sapa and Mai where Explore Tailormade recommends Mai Chau Ecolodge. Built entirely of natural materials these traditional stilt-style bungalows have private gardens and plunge pool.

A must-see on any itinerary to Vietnam is Hue, here you will discover elegant pagodas and bridges over the Perfume River, explore the citadel and wander vibrant night markets. Stay at the Pilgrimage Village Resort in Hue, a boutique property with spa located in the countryside on the outskirts of the city.

With dramatic white sand dunes, unspoilt beaches and clear blue seas perfect for snorkelling, the beaches of Vietnam are heavenly. Unwind at Anantara Mui Ne Resort and Spa, located on Mui Ne beach, for views over Phan Thiet Bay. Surrounded by tropical jungle one of our favourite places to stay is Mango Bay, Phu Quoc; a rustic resort offering smart wooden bungalows and relaxed dining options.

Sri Lanka

Forward-thinking and progressive, Sri Lanka still remains an island deeply imbued with a sense of pride in its traditions.

Explore the island’s phenomenal ‘Cultural Triangle’, which encompasses no fewer than five UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Kandy, the island’s last Buddhist capital and home to the Temples of the Sacred Tooth – said to be Buddha’s left canine. To the north is the ancient city of Anuradhapura, famous for its shrines, dagobas and the sacred Bodhi tree, grown from the tree under which Buddha found enlightenment. We recommend the Sanctuary at Tissawewa, a colonial property which opened in 1907. With an element of faded grandeur the property is comfortable, offering a large verandah, spacious rooms and 11 acres of landscaped gardens. Don’t forget the astonishing Lion’s Rock and the impressive paintings at the cave temple of Dambulla.

Northern Sri Lanka has only just opened up after a 30 year civil war. A raw and unpolished destination, it’s a different proposition to the much visited south. Travelling there offers a very interesting and authentic experience, with locals being friendly and inquisitive.

Sri Lanka’s superb beaches lie all along its coastline and vary greatly in character, with sandy coves and estuaries and long palm-fringed stretches. Explore Tailormade recommend the Jetwing Lighthouse in Galle, a charming property situated directly on the coast and designed by the iconic architect Geoffrey Bawa. The suites have extended balconies and ocean views.

Prices for a 14 day guided, highlights tour of Sri Lanka, based on comfortable hotels starts from £2095 per person.
