Kate Holland is a multi award winning bookbinder, specialising in contemporary fine bindings to commission. She works closely with clients, first sourcing a first or beautifully printed edition of their favourite novel or selecting the best structure to house their precious poems, sketches, lyrics, scripts, recipes, anything paper based. A design is agreed upon which reflects the text, illustrations and typeface of the book and, using traditional materials and techniques to produce a unique, modern binding. Only the finest goat and calfskin leather is chosen, along with co-ordinating handmade papers and lettering and decoration hand tooled in 23c gold. The whole is then encased in a custom-made, conservation-grade, light and dustproof solander box.

She also works with individuals and private presses to produce the whole book, whether one offs or limited editions. She has access to some of the best printers, both museum quality archival digital and traditional letterpress. She can advise on all aspects of book production from printing, through layout, to binding and boxes.

She is a Fellow of Designer Bookbinder, one of the foremost societies dedicated to the craft of fine bookbinding in the world. She has books in the British, Bodleian and Yale University Libraries as well as many public and private collections internationally. She is regularly commissioned to bind one of the shortlisted titles for the annual Booker Prize.

In collaboration with the artist Luke Martineau and the poet Kate Bingham, Kate is delighted to offer to Beyond Bespoke’s customers a pair of signed, limited edition books. Every Girl’s and Every Boy’s Alphabets are each published in an edition of 150 only, of which 145 standard copies are hardback, cloth bound and 5 luxury copies are bound in full leather with onlays and gold tooling. All books come in a numbered, presentation box wrapped in the corresponding Alphabet paper with co-ordinating ribbon. These are designed to become collectable classics, in which sensitive observation and clever use of form combine to create two beautiful companion pieces. They are the perfect gift.

She has made visitors books using the wallpaper from clients’ halls as the endpapers. She has hand tooled children’s drawings onto the covers of notebooks. She can write your signature or message large in gold on anything. In the age of the e-book, this is an opportunity to own a unique, heirloom quality book - the ultimate portable technology.

In short, Kate can help you create the book you never knew existed.
