The Importance of Self-Care this Autumn

Summer is still here, yes, but as we try to hold on, white-knuckled, to the last of the long and warm(ish) days, it’s a good time to start preparing for the colder months. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love autumn, with its frosty mornings and cosy nights in spent with a glass of vintage wine, and I’m definitely the sort of person to start getting excited for Christmas way too early, but there’s no doubt that with the good comes the bad. The tiredness on dark mornings, the consistent colds, the unhealthy (comfort) eating. We need to find natural ways to defend ourselves and stay happy and healthy.

The first morning that is deemed acceptable to start the Autumn fashion and beauty ritual – the dark berry lip, the scarves, the coats – is an exciting day for dressing tables and wardrobes everywhere. But trying to wake up when it still looks like midnight outside isn’t easy or fun. With the lack of natural light, we are less likely to awaken naturally and so our bodies take longer to fully ‘wake up’. Hitting the snooze button only adds to the problem, so it’s important to set your alarm for when you’re most likely to wake up and stay up. There is a great app called Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock which can track your sleep and wake you up when your sleep is at its lightest, within a half-hour specified window that you set. I’ve used this on and off for years, and I really do wake up feeling more refreshed. Then the challenge is to keep yourself feeling energized despite the dark sky. I find swapping my usual morning tea for Teapigs Up Beet energy tea helps, plus the hibiscus, ginger, green tea and beetroot can all help improve immune function.

Dark mornings and evenings not only cause tiredness, but can actually contribute to a lower mood. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a ‘winter depression’ affecting many of us through higher levels of melatonin (a sleep-inducing hormone) and lower levels of serotonin (the ‘happy’ hormone), but even with milder winter blues, you may need a little pick-me-up. Essential oils are an effective way of lifting your mood. Neom Organics use various essential oils in their collections, such as in their Scent to Make You Happy range, including neroli, mimosa and lemon. Their Mood Lifting Kit includes a pulse point rollerball that you can use whenever and wherever you need a bit of aromatherapy. Exercise, too, is another highly effective anti-depressant, and there’s nothing that gets me to the gym faster than some new gym kit – Sweaty Betty and Lucas Hugh have such a great range that would motivate anyone to get some cardio in.

And then, even when we’re awake and happy, in comes the common cold or flu virus to try and bring us back down. Meetings, mealtimes and bedtimes are filled with annoying runny noses and sore throats, and you suddenly realise that every day before the mass-sneezes began was taken for granted. Whilst they may not completely prevent you from catching a cold or the flu, there are a few things you can do to help avoid it. Exercising and eating healthily is a good place to start, as it’s easy to fall into a pattern of comfort eating as the days get colder. The Teapigs tea mentioned earlier can help, as well as adding Naomi’s Kitchen superfood blends to smoothies, porridge or even on its own with water. The ‘I Am Cleansed’ blend in particular has ingredients such as Wheatgrass, Chlorella and Spirulina which can help support and strengthen your body’s immune system, making you healthy from the inside out.

Continuing on this theme, encouraging health from the inside to show on the outside needs to be focussed on greatly as Autumn sets in. The colder weather and lack of sunshine can create dull skin and lacklustre hair, and the effectiveness of creams and oils are limited. Lumity Anti-Ageing Supplements are expertly formulated with nutrients to nourish the deepest layers of your skin, whilst helping maintain great hair and nails. Amongst other beneficial ingredients, Turmeric root, Iodine, Omega 3s and amino acids are the perfect recipe for radiant, supple skin; whilst Vitamins A, C, D and Selenium and Zinc will contribute to that all important healthy immune function – so when the cold snap hits, you can look your best and feel your best at the same time. Brilliant, less time spent feeling ill and looking tired, more time spent getting excited for Christmas, right?
